More information on Health Insurance

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T HAVE INSURANCE?

If you can afford health insurance but don't buy it, you must have a health coverage exemption or pay a fine. The amount of the fine is determined by either your income or a set amount - whichever is bigger. The fines for 2015 and 2016 are listed below:

2015 FEE FOR NO COVERAGE

2% of your income

$325 per person in your household

(Maximum payment $975)

You pay whichever amount is larger

2016 FEE FOR NO COVERAGE

You pay whichever amount is larger

2.5% of your income

$695 per person in your household ($350 per child under 18, maximum payment $2,085)

Medical costs can be expensive and unplanned for:

Fixing a broken leg can cost up to $7,500

On average a 3-day hospital stay is around $30,000

Care for cancer patients can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars

WHY DO I NEED INSURANCE?

Having insurance can protect you from costs like these and get you free preventive care, like vaccines, screenings, and check-ups. You will also avoid paying the fine people who don't have coverage have to pay.

Lowering your healthcare costs with subsidies

WHAT IS A SUBSIDY?

A subsidy is financial assistance from the government that you don't have to pay back. You may be able to get a subsidy depending on your income, family size, and how much health insurance costs in North Carolina compared to other states.
